Revenge, a surprise hit for ABC created by Mike Kelley, has just the right mix of campy comedy and sudsy melodrama, not to mention a narrative excitement that keeps you perched on the edge of your couch cushion. It doesn’t hurt that the whole thing looks gorgeous, from its lovingly detailed Hamptons settings (shot mainly in Manhattan Beach, California) to its gleaming cast. The show, returning for its second season this month, stars Emily VanCamp as a scheming young woman whose real name is Amanda Clarke but who has chosen to go by Emily Thorne, lest her fiendish designs become known to the Hamptonites whom she hopes to dispatch to their doom for having successfully conspired to frame her dear old dad when she was but a little girl, way back in the 90s. Possessing a certain blank affect that lends a soupçon of menace to her fresh Canadian looks, the 26-year-old VanCamp successfully anchors a show perennially in danger of throwing its viewers overboard with each new blast of plot. VanCamp’s on-screen wingwomen are the fashionable Londoner Ashley Madekwe, who plays the ambitious party planner Ashley Davenport, and the California-born Christa B. Allen, whose character, the poor little rich girl Charlotte Grayson, can’t help but be a victim, despite her best efforts to enact her own revenge. Ever so loosely based on The Count of Monte Cristo, the much-adapted doorstop of a novel by Alexandre Dumas, Revenge is proving that—Downton Abbey be damned—Americans still know how to make a wicked soap opera when they set their minds to it.

Emily is featured in the current GQ (UK) issue. There’s an article about Tyler Shields with some pictures taken by him, and they released a different one from the photoshoot Revenge cast did back in 2011. You can find the scan uploaded in the gallery.

“This is Emily VanCamp and Ashley Madekwe from huge American TV Series Revenge”, says Shields. “They got in touch and said they wanted to be photographed by me. That’s not through the TV network, which would never have approved this, but the shoot generated so much press and publicity for the show that they ended up loving the shoot. If I had suggested this to a magazine to pitch to a publicist, it would never have happened.”

On her style evolution: “Coming from a small town in Canada, it was not something that ever came naturally to me, this whole dressing up thing. I used to really envy the girls who could just throw something together so beautifully because I had no concept of how to do that…It’s taking what makes you feel comfortable and bumping it up a notch.”

On her breakup from Vampire Diaries star Joseph Morgan: “I’m working non-stop in L.A., he’s working in Atlanta. It kind of makes it impossible. It doesn’t take away from the love that two people have, and I think he’s extraordinary.”

On the qualities that make for a perfect boyfriend: “It’s all about making me laugh. I can be quite serious sometimes so laughing is key. I think it’s important to be with a guy who has a strong sense of integrity. That’s how I was raised, and that’s something I look for. And humility. I think people who lack humility are really annoying.”
