You’re a kid and a local rich bee-otch is responsible for your dad’s death so, you grow up and go back to The Hamptons for a little payback while living the posh life among those responsible for dad’s demise. That’s the premise for the hot new series “Revenge” starring Emily Van Camp who was a fan fave on “Everwood” and “Brothers and Sisters”. TeenTV is in Beverly Hills asking Emily why she’s into the role and T.V. in general and we’re asking how fun is it to play a slinky “baddie” for a change. “Revenge” starts Wednesday night on ABC. TeenTV: Do you believe in revenge? Emily: I suppose if it’s justified but I’m more into the idea of positivity and forgiveness but it’s a lot of fun to play, I’m not gonna lie. Just sort of living those feelings through the character is great. But she’s quite justified in what she’s doing. I mean, these people stole everything from her. They are horrible people. They do really bad things. And I think, on some level, everybody can connect with the theme of revenge, whether they act on it or not. TeenTV: How would you describe your character Emily Thorne? What makes her tick? Emily: I think she’s a tortured soul who existed in so much pain that, at some point, she had to shut that off and is desperately seeking some kind of intangible relationship with her father and this (revenge kick) is her way of having that. She’s really tragic in a way. She’s somebody who, for years, hasn’t been able to truly feel because, if she does, then she has to forgive these people (for her dad’s death) and that’s not possible for her. She’s had eight years to plan this (revenge) out and she’s really covered her bases. |

The broadcast networks have more than 30 shows debuting this fall. To help you prepare for it all, TVLine is offering First Impressions based on the not-for-review pilots. Next on our list is.… THE SHOW | ABC’s Revenge (Wednesdays at 10/9c, premiering Sept. 21) THE COMPETITION | CBS’ relocated CSI, NBC’s Law & Order: SVU, USA Network’s Psych (starting Oct. 12), FX’s American Horror Story (new, premiering Oct. 5) THE SET-UP | Emily Thorne née Amanda Clark is out for [see show title] in this sexy spin on The Counte of Monte Cristo. Seventeen years ago, Amanda’s father (played in flashback by Men in Trees‘ James Tupper, replacing Marc Blucas from the original pilot) was sentenced to life in prison for a ghastly crime. Years later, upon learning of her dad’s innocence and who was responsible for framing him, Amanda adopts a new, well-funded identity and makes tracks for the Hamptons, resolved to ruin those who ruined her childhood — including but by no means limited to society doyenne Victoria. HE GOOD | My refrain of choice for those who have asked me about Revenge: This is some good, frothy fun, a primetime sudser the likes of which we haven’t enjoyed in a while. The pilot efficiently lays the foundation for Emily’s want for vindication, then affords time for her to cut one or two targets off at the knees with military-like precision. (There’s an awesome moment where she “unwittingly” exposes an affair that leaves the adulterer, the betrayed and you the viewer at a loss for words.) The solid cast is led by VanCamp, at once a contradiction of steely eyes and warm smile, and Stowe, as the prickly and very powerful Victoria. Mann also pops, playing a young Internet billionaire who owes his success to Amanda’s father. |

Revenge executive producer Mike Kelley addressed television critics this afternoon at ABC’s TCA presentation in Los Angeles and promised everyone that although Emily Van Camp’s character will do a whole lot of “diabolical” things, viewers will end up rooting for her anyway. Through “origin flashbacks” we will get a more sympathetic look at the character of Emily Thorne, who goes by the moniker Amanda upon moving back to the Hamptons. “Part of the fun of the show is watching the dis-ease that comes as the acts unfold,” Kelley explained, “as revenge won’t just be had on those immediately involved in conspiracy but also anyone who’s had a hand in [bad].” Though she starts out with a very clear goal in mind of just getting back at those she feels wronged her family when she was younger, but as time goes on, she realizes there are very real people underneath, and at times that will mean she ends up harming those she doesn’t necessarily intend to, namely Daniel (Josh Bowman). |

She’s nobody’s little sister anymore. Having broken in as a TV star as the sweet girl-next-door in Everwood and the sweet not-quite-sister in Brothers & Sisters, Emily VanCamp returns to ABC this fall as a possibly homicidal, definitely vengeful heiress in Revenge. “I’m going to really disappoint my fans with this,” VanCamp jokes. The show casts her as a young woman whose father’s life was destroyed by a conspiracy organized by a wealthy Hamptons family. So she returns to the scene of the crime, determined to get revenge on all the incredibly wealthy people who ruined her father’s life. “I think we’re coming to a point in time when the American people are going to want to see the take down of the rich,” says Madeleine Stowe, who plays the show’s central conspirator. “I think this show is going to play very well.” |
